Q: Where does Eastern Hills Coalition of Churches build homes?
A: We focus on the 'Eastern Hills' area of Cincinnati.
Q: Where is the coalition building this year?
A: We are building on 109 Winkler Street in the Mt Auburn area of Cincinnati. Click here for a map. From the Anderson Township/Mt Washington area take
  • I-471 North to Liberty Street Exit (last exit before I-71)
  • Liberty Street (West) to Sycamore Street (first traffic light)
  • Right/North (up the hill) on Sycamore Street to Mulberry Street (2nd street on Left side)
  • Left/West on Mulberry Street to Rice Street (If you come to Vine Street Elementary School, you have passed Rice Street)
  • Right/North on Rice Street to Winkler Street (1st street on Right side)
  • Right/East on Winkler
  • 109 Winkler is the 3rd House on Right

  • Please note that there is NO PARKING on the right side of Winkler Street. Please plan on parking on Rice Street.
Q: Who gets the homes?
A: Cincinnati Habitat for Humanity selects families who need decent and affordable housing, and who are willing to put in 500 hours of their own time towards building them. They have all the detail on this process at their web site. Our Partner Families work on and then purchase the homes - we do not give the homes away.

This year we are building homes for the Terry Adams and Marcia Ragland families. For more information our our 2002 Partner Families see our Project Fact Sheet.

Q: Can kids volunteer?
A: Yes! We've had a lot of teenagers volunteer for our project - and that's great! We plan to turn them all into future Habitat-junkies. But for now, we have a few rules about what teenagers can do on the site - see our Youth Policy page for the official rules about 'minors' working onsite. Basically, kids from ages 14-15 can be onsite with their adult supervisors, performing jobs that don't involve power tools, machinery, ladders or scaffolding. But the important part is that they must have an adult supervisor with them. Ages 16 and 17 can do more activities, but we still have limits. Over all of this is the discretion of our Lead Site Coordinator - Roger Allendorf. Roger has the final decision on what youth are allowed to do, and what they can not do. If, after reading Habitat's 'Youth Policy' you still have questions, please let us know and we will get them answered. Email us or call (388-9663). And please keep in mind that we encourage youth to do a lot of other things for Habitat - providing lunches, cleaning up the site, moving lumber and materials around the site, helping out with non-construction activities too! If you are a young person who wants to volunteer, please do so - we have plenty of work to do!
Q: How is the coalition managed?
A: Large projects like this require a lot of organization and management. The project is managed by a Steering Committee that consists of roles for Chairperson, Lead Site Coordinator, Fundraiser, Public Relations, Family  Advocate and so on. Each member church also has one representative on the Steering Committee.
Q: When can I volunteer - is it too early or too late?
A: It's never too early nor too late to volunteer! Sign-up using our online volunteer form or contact us at the name & number below to get a paper form mailed to you.
Q: How much time is required if I do volunteer?
A: You can pretty much do as much or as little as you want. You could be on-site every Saturday, or just one. You could help out with one lunch, or coordinate each one of them. If you have a preference on how much or little you want to work, please add that to the Other Comments section on the volunteer form.

Q:

When does the work day start and end?

A:

We start at 8:30 AM and go through 4:00 PM. Our opening devotion starts at 8:20. We encourage everyone to be there by 8:00 AM to make sure there is enough time to get paperwork done if required.

Q:

What paperwork is involved?

A:

Everyone has to sign-in and get a name tag. The first time you come to the site we have some safety forms and waivers of liability that Habitat requires you to sign.

Q:

Can people volunteer for half of a day?

A:

Yes, if we have someone to fill-in for them the rest of the day. We need to have a position filled for the whole day - if there is someone who wants to work in the morning, we need to have someone to replace them in the afternoon.

Q:

What's for lunch?

A:

We provide a tasty lunch for people who are working the full day. If you are working a half-day, please eat before/after you get to the site. We also need groups to provide the lunches for us - see our Lunch Provider's page for details.

Q:

What do I need to bring?

A:

Bring a water-jug, and a tool belt and hammer if you have them. We will make sure we have other tools ready to go at the site. Mark your tools with your name so they don't get lost!

Q:

But I don't know how to build a house!

A:

That's OK, we will show you how to do what's needed, and you won't have to do anything that you are uncomfortable with.

Q:

What should I wear?

A:

Wear sturdy shoes. May people like to wear a hat to help keep the sun out of their eyes. Bring sunscreen if you want.

Q: Where can I learn more about Habitat for Humanity?
A: Cincinnati Habitat for Humanity has a great webs site at www.cincinnati-habitat.org, and you can also go to Habitat for Humanity International's site at www.habitat.org.
Q: I have more questions - who can I ask?
A: Contact the Eastern Hills Coalition Chairperson - Steve Bogner, 388-9663 or email at sbogner@insightcp.com. Or fill-in the form below:
